My parents used to have internet service so they can watch Chinese movies/tv series. But the internet kept going down so we ended up cancelling. And Mom didn't want to spend the $ to order Comcast's "Chinese channels from China." We discussed getting this black box which has 200 Chinese channels from HK and China. But decided against it because it required the internet.
After Mom passed, I ordered the "Chinese" channels from Comcast for my Dad hoping it would keep him entertained. But he didn't watch it much as the channels were from China - all mandarin. So I thought maybe it's time to look into this "black box."
Anyways, long story short, I ordered internet from Comcast, bought the "black box" and hooked it up for my Dad. Now my Dad can watch live tv broadcasts from HK & China, movies, sports and lots more. And I think of how my Mom would have enjoyed it and why didn't we do it for her then :( For $220, it would've made her quality of life so much more enjoyable. At least she was home all of the time. Dad is still going out....
So it got me thinking and I remembered my Mom spending $3k on a new set of teeth in HK. This was the trip to say goodbye to her brothers after her cancer diagnosis and the last time she would see them. She was also still shopping for clothes and even said to me that she knows she didn't have long to live but she didn't care. She gave me this little smile and said "Who do you know would spend the $ knowing they had less than a year to live!" She was going to enjoy her new teeth and buying and wearing her new clothes! She lived for the moment and didn't let anything stand in her way.
Life is too short as someone who used to be close to me always said. It's too short to be unhappy and to hold back. It's cliche and corny but so true. I need to do this for myself and more importantly for my Mom. I'll do my best to shake off the built-up insecurities formed from my life's experiences.
