The very best part was seeing Mom clapping and waving this lighted wand. Also, her smiles were all worth it. It was a great ending to an awesome trip!
It'a our last night here and we're going to the Jacky Cheung concert!!! OMG, so excited. One because Mom is so happy as he is her favorite singer. Two because he is also my favorite HK singer and we were fortunate that 4th Uncle was able to secure 2 more tix for me and Rob. Although it couldn't have been too exciting for Rob as he's not familiar with Jacky's music.

Part of our plan for our trip was to visit 4th Uncle's house in Guanzhou in China. He bought this house to get away from the city and to live in a peaceful and calm environment.
Rob and I planned on going for a couple days just to hang out with my parents and Uncles. But we made a detour to buy some "fake" stuff at Sum Jun which is a city right outside the border. Basically, a it was a mall where you can choose anything you want (belts, handbags, wallets, luggage, etc) from catalogs! We spent about 3-4 hours there and barely made it to the last bus to Guanzhou. My poor Aunt May was fretting alot but we made it. It was about a 3-hour bus ride but pretty uneventful. After the bus ride, we ended up at some late night restaurant. The bathrooms were typical - a hole in the floor where your squatting skills come into play. Hey, when you have to go you have to go! But it would be better if the signs had the girl/boy icons on it as Rob and I don't read Chinese. No big deal as Rob went into the girl's bathroom. Luckily there wasn't anyone in there. Though a woman did a double take when heading in and Rob walked out! Then there were the roaches....but again no big deal. Just our 1st night in China! Uncle's house was amazing, a tri-level with 6 bedrooms and 6 baths. It was in a security guarded estates but once you leave the gated community, it was a whole different story. The poverty was well showcased and I know I have a lot ot be thankful for. But the people seem to be happy.....but maybe I'm just being naive. As a little side trip, Rob and I went to Macau. Now I haven't been there for over 20 years! I remember it as a run down place and never thought I would go again. But now with all of the new developments from the States, it was almost like we were in Vegas. Almost....except for all of the Chinese mainlanders there. Won't say anymore about them but let's just say they weren't the type of people I'd want to hang out with.
As part of our package with the hotel and ferry tix, we also have an opportunity to try the most expensive coffee in the world. It's basically coffee beans eaten by this "cat" and pooped out. Something about how the beans are ingested through the cat and it's pooped out in clusters. Don't ask....anyways, we were shown a video about the process. The coffee was really good but all I kept smelling was poop!? Maybe I shouldn't have watched the video. Overall, I had a great time and would totally recommend Macau! My mom wasn't interested in going.... We just landed and Mom did ok. She spent a lot of time walking around the plane. We were a little worried about how her body will take to the long flight. But so far she's is A-ok! It was a long-ass flight and my butt was killing me. The seats on Cathay Pacific changed and seem harder.
Uncle Desmond and Aunt May met us at the airport. We were to meet everyone else for dinner at a restaurant near 4th Uncle's place. It was nice and humid! But not complaining.... At the restaurant, Betty and Richard were there as well as 4th Uncle. There was some special on Maine lobsters and 4th Uncle ordered so many that Betty thought we brought them from Boston! I can tell Mom was tired but happy. So it's all worth it. |

AuthorI'm fortunate enough to have an awesome job at a biotech company. I'm also blessed to have the bestest of friends in the world - from Castle Square, ATASK, and Jamie Club - you know who you are! Last but not least, I have a family that are always there for me. Categories |
